
Tate Modern is part of the Tate galleries along with Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives. It is a British national museum of international modern art, it is located at Bankside in London, exactly on the south bank of the Thames in Southwark, in the immediate vicinity of the Globe Theatre and the Millennium Bridge. A large part of gallery is the power plant, it was mainly excluded from use in 1981. The southern part of the building still holds its original function, and the transformer substation is the source of the hum in the Turbine Hall. The Tate Modern gallery was opened in 2000 after the reconstruction of the building.
Since its opening, the Tate Modern is one of the most important museums presenting modern art. On the first floor you can see the Turbine Hall, which were once electricity generators were stored, it has a seven-story building height and has area of 3400 square meters. Works of contemporary artists made for the museum are presented here. Small Floor II is used to present the works of contemporary artists. Permanent exhibitions are presented at Floor III and Floor V, and Floor IV is used for temporary exhibitions.
Among the works presented in the Turbine Hall were inter alia: Ai Weiwei – Sunflower Seeds, Miroslaw Balka – How It Is, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster – TH.2058, Doris Salcedo – Shibboleth, Louise Bourgeois – Maman, I Do, I Undo, I Redo. On the upper floors you can find many interesting installations, prints, paintings, sculptures and other works of art. They are often changed, so you may want to look at the Tate Modern website, which presents news and you can check the list of works that are now available. Many of them impress with their unusual forms, some are difficult to understand, others simply communicate the truth. Therefore a visit to the Tate Modern surely will be memorable and it is worth spending your time on it.
Gallery opening hours: Monday – Friday: 10.00-18.00, Friday and Saturday: 10.00-22.00. Closed 24-26 December. In addition to works of art in the gallery you can find restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops.
